Arizona 2003

These are a few pictures from our trip to Arizona. We arrived in Phoenix late on the 22nd of February and spent a week visiting with Mom and Dad and seeing the sites. For anyone who lives in the area this page will be a "Done that, been there" but for Michigander's looking at piles of snow in February it was a wonderful change of scenery.

During our stay, the Phoenix basin decided to end it's five year drought and rain. In one week more rain fell then in the preceding year. It made us change our plan for the week but didn't keep us from seeing the things we wanted to see. This just meant that there was water in the river bed which normally sits dry most of the year and that places like White Tanks were a bit greener than usual. Late at night and early morning you can hear the coyotes out on the river bed yipping and howling when they had found a rabbit or some other unfortunate breakfast food. A very different sound to wake up to in the morning.

Oak Canyon

On the way up towards Flagstaff we found a little park overlooking this canyon. The view was great. You could see the roads snake through and nearly double back on themselves as they made their way down the side to the floor of the canyon. A road not well suited for larger vehicles. To get to this point your ears have already been popping as if you are on a airplane from the elevation but just a little further North of the canyon you see how much further up you can go (fourth picture).

The Wildlife Zoo

The Wildlife Zoo had quite a collection of different animals. It had orignally been a private collection which became eventually a breeding zoo supplying animals to several other zoos. There were a pair of white tiger cubs and a couple different species of monkey who also had young.

The Lowry cage was great. You can help with feeding the Lowrys three times a day a meal of fresh fruit. If the movie "The birds" gives you the willys then feeding the Lowrys is not for you.

White Tanks

This was a wonderful hike. Instead of taking the path up to the waterfall the kids decided to hike the rocks of the riverbed all the way up. On the way to the waterfall you find several rocks covered with the petroglyphs. Because of the rain everything was a bit brighter green. Some of the cactus and other plants had started to bloom. Every type of plant seemed to have a sharp edge or point of some kind.

Yuma Territorial Prison

Mexico

We drove down to Yuma, crossed over into California and then made a run for the border at Algodones. There was not many pictures taken in Mexico. There was plenty of little shops to browse through

Montezuma's Castle

Sedona

Some of these pictures were taken right from the parking lots of store in Sedona. I would think this kind of view would get boring after while don't you?? :-)
